Do we need security software for tablets?
Be they iPad or Samsung, how are the chances of getting infected? Could we install the same security software for desktop on to the tablets? Which are the best pieces of security software for tablets including those free ones?

I suppose the reason that we can't use the same anti-malware software that Windows operating systems use because they are different operating systems. Am I right?

Kinda pricey but worth it, IMHO.
We use CompuTrace by Absolute Software to protect computers and Smat/PDA/Phone/Tablet's.
Depending on the number of devices and the level of protection, it can be as low as $30 (USD) per year (3 year minimum).
A few years ago during a trial and proof of concept we had a break in at the office and two laptops were stolen. We initiated a continual remote wipe of the laptops. We managed to trace and get one laptop back, the other would surface from time to time (a sort of GPS tracking that CompuTrace employs) but we were never able to retrieve it. Eventually we didn't hear from it at all.
After that experience I had no problem in getting the expense into the budget.
The CompuTrace client also gives you other management tools. The most useful was the software inventory. At first it's pretty overwhelming but you can write reports to help filter out the noise.
You can purchase online but I worked with our CDW sales person who was able to get a better price.

I suppose this is still related to computer security.
I tend to suspect the effectiveness of this concept. Can't the CompuTrace products installed on the computers be removed as soon as the computers are stolen?

iOS is safer than Android but only as safe as Apple/App store oversight can be. You can hardly get apps on to a device if you are a registered developer, much less through a backdoor malware method.
Android based systems are another matter and I would definitely think security software would be a good thing on those devices. The fortunate thing about Android is that the ecosphere isn't homogenous thus limiting the spread of malware across platforms. If anyone ever does break iOS certification, Apple users are well and truly .... compromised.

I suppose you mean to say "You can hardly get apps on to a device if you are NOT a registered developer, much less through a backdoor malware method."
It sounds like the iPads are still the safer choice though they are more expensive. However I find they are not as versatile as a Windows system, or even as the Mac. I have not had a go at Android tablets yet, I don't know how they compare to Windows systems.

Oh I meant exactly what was written! Apple products are a joy for the user on the front end and a curse for developers on the back end. Google "Xcode" and "provisioning profile".

No MDM for one device
That sounds like overkill. I currently use avast which provides remote wipe, tracking, and you can rename it to whatever you want to hide that it is installed. It will also take a remote picture through the front camera to try to catch the theif. It is free. AVG also offers a free solution for mobile devices. BTW I use android and love it!
