How to keep video file after watching?
When we watch video, be it from youtube or webcast or anything from the Internet, I suppose there would be a temporary file or something similar temporarily stored on the local computer. How can we retrieve them for keeps?

Some do and some don't have this option
Look in the Temp Internet File Folder and see if there is anything listed there. Though you should understand that a lot of Sites do not download to your system it is played as it downloads.

Well! I do not know how to identify the files. I think they do not have the file extension I would usually expect. I did try some files and they are usually not executable.
By the way, are they usually stored in the C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp folder?

How to keep video file after watching?
Yes youtube uses progressive streaming these days
In the Tools of internet explorer
internet options>browsing history>settings>view files>rightclick an empty space and view details will line them up descending then> sort by type scroll down to flash
it would be represented by a flash icon,
Some do some don't as mentioned above.
Chrome has an inbuilt downloader or google chrome youtube downloader google Chrome Extensions
Firefox as well has a flash downloader plugin Google Firefox Flash Video Downloader - Youtube Downloader

Thank you for the information. I manage to go to view the files. However they don't mean anything to me. Most of them are Internet hyperlinks.
I usually use Firefox. So there is nowhere to retrieve the files, isn't there?

If you want to do this frequently and general purpose
I would check out commercial screen video capture software and/or hardware. YouTube can be captured via plugin fairly easily. (there are even websites that do it for you)

Thanks! I am not using it commercially. Just a good feature to have, though.

Firefox tools
For Firefox and Chrome there are several add ons that will give you a click/save option in YouTube. In Firefox Google save YouTube Firefox. I think I use download helper. It does not have a 100% success rate. There are also YouTube to mp3 tools.
Now that I have told you how, Copyright violations are on you. But it is a good way to share a clip when you will be some place with limited/no Internet access.

What is on youtube should be in the public domain, otherwise it won't let us download or save.

saving flash videos
if ua using ubuntu, follow the codes-
lsof | grep flash
this will result in some similar output to this--
plugin-co 5288 prady4 23u REG 7,0 19223376 618721 /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so
then,
cp /proc/5288/fd/23 ~/Downloads
you gotta change the numeric terms as per your case.

Easy web method for capturing a video
Just go to www.keepvid.com and you can download a copy of a video from YouTube and possibly other video hosters such as Vimeo. This site is clever in laying potholes for you to step into though in the way of a lot of spurious buttons that are just there to get you sidetracked into some offering or another. Watch the short instructional video I prepared for my students at DePaul to show them how to use keepvid.com effectively. It's at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJg7UsrCWN4 . This method isn't perfect but it's workable and a lot better than a sharp stick in the eye.

I use savevid.com for downloading youtube video. It needs a plug-in installed from the site though.
I have watched your video. Well done!
Anyway the discussion here is not only related to youtube. I am canvassing about any video watched on the Internet, be it webcast or anything else.

DVDVideoSoft
If you are doing youtube videos called FreeYouTube Download from DVDVideoSoft Free Studio. It can easily be found on Cnet's downloadcom. Works great. Only drawback is you have to put up with a nag to load a toolbar when closing the program once you are finished.

Thanks! I have once used an installed program to download youtube video. I found that it is not as good as that done using Internet browser which allows me to download more than one video at one time. Of course if we use other features that come with the program then it would justify its installation.

How to keep video file after watching?
Just download and install Real Player. It will allow you to save a wide variety of embedded videos from websites, not just YouTube.

I will certainly try it when I get a chance. I was asking if I can watch and save the file at the same time or get the temporary file after the event without separate download.

Very essy
Get this free tool (VideoCacheView) from (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/video_cache_view.html) to scan your .temp files from all the browsers. Right-Click on any file (after scan is complete) to play or copy even with the file name.
Yes, youtube uses progressive streaming these days, so be sure your file has streamed to the end or even watch the bytes from the tool
The file is less than 70kb and needs no installation unless you choice to get the .exe file
There you go

I like it. It seems this is my answer. I have not been able to test it with others except for youtube. The good thing with this one is, one can try the video before downloading and saving it.
I wonder if it would work with audio file though.

Hi, I've just watched a video with Firefox from http://ct.techrepublic.com/clicks?t=1156583763-b89184a5756643bee01d25374b930432-bf&brand=TECHREPUBLIC&s=5. After I finished I couldn't find it using the same program. It looks like the program only works with youtube.com. I closed the Firefox and tried again. I still had no success.

webcast
Be it webcast or youtube, I have supposed there must be a temporary file for buffering before the video to be played. So I have presumed there must be a way to retrieve the webcast files as well.

There is no tool that will download everything on the internet the copyrights laws would have a field day,, webcasts are one site that has copyrighted.
They have a paid service that allows you to watch it on your PC.
You could capture it from there if you needed it.
Realistically the best shot is these :
Youtube downloader pro
http://youtube-downloader-hq-pro.en.softonic.com/
20 dollars, the pro version offers, The program works with two most popular browsers: Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer.
supports numerous video queued also functions as a video or audio converter just switch tabs from download to convert and drop your video/audio on select output to convert to, there also an inbuilt player.
I find it will download from other sites
It will tell you that list of approved sites.
There is also keepvideo just insert your URL
http://keepvid.com/
If you want a tool that is not free then there
WM Recorder
