what to do with virus?
When a file is stored in quarantine it is to await for disinfection.
Whenever if ever the file is disinfected or otherwise proven to be harmless will be released from quarantine and can be used as normal.
What is the error that you get?
Is you copy of Windows genuine?

yes, the copy of windows is genuine. the error 'windows encountered error'. i have tried it many times and it is just always the same error. i had installed avast but never detect any virus or malware when i run anti malware avast has a high risk malware so i deleted it. i removed/uninstalled and installed avira since i get error with microsoft secrutiy essentials a few features in it tht i dont like so i now use rising antivirus.
i am still getting errors with windows like installing updates there are several important updates that failed to install and i dont know why. i tried the link where it can troubleshoot what's the error but it has not fix anything.

keep avast
install malwarebytes...the two shouldn't conflict at all; I run the two together and have for a number of years. You may also want to install ccleaner first and run it, leave it set on the defaults; it'll clear your cookies and temp files. I would also recommend running all three in safe mode. Afterwards, try to install MSE again. Let us know how it goes.

If you like MicroSoft Security Essentials and find it works for you, then by all means, keep it and uninstall Avast. I always tell folks to keep what works for them if they're happy with it. Uninstall any/all other antivirus programs that you have as they may conflict with MSE. You can also keep malwarebytes and ccleaner then run them a couple times a month
. Good luck

Save yourself time and frustration and now that you know your problems originated from viruses in your system get your self a real protection so that you dont have to go true this again!
I am a computer technician and fix infected computers on a daily bases.
One solution I have found to work both for myself and all my clients is Kaspersky Internet Security.
Install the 2013 version and go to Amazon and buy the 2012 version. This will save you money but works as good as if you got the 2013 to start with.
Here is a link http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kaspersky-Internet-Security-2012-License/dp/B004YZRFDW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1356797666&sr=8-4
Enjoy a year of superb protection for less than 13

one should do what works for them....there's lots of good free antivirus programs out there...I do my fair share of virus/malware removal as well.

Do you use Microsoft Security Essentials yourself?
If not don't recommend it!
I only recommend what I am using and know to really work.
Also what kind of non sense is "find it (what) works for you", is the guy suppose to try all freeware and shareware out there to find one that works...!?
After all that's what got him in trouble on a first place.
The whole idea of this forum is to give him a solution not send him away with more problems.
Hope he has some sense and 12 a year to spend
If he really needs to go for a free one - Avast will feet the bill.

No, I dont use MSE myself, but we have put it on a few machines and it works well for the folks that have those machines. I personally prefer Avast (and I recommended the OP keep Avast, I cant force it upon them if MSE is what they would prefer). If you read back, its MSE that they were looking to try but was having trouble installing it. I have seen MSE, Avira, Avast, AVG, BitDefender, and a number of others in use and have used most of those myself in the past. I recommend what would likely work best for the average user, not what would be more my speed or level. About 99% of what I recommend folks use are products I have used myself in the course of the last 20 yrs or so. The other stuff would be ideas I get from my husband and hes been in the computer/repair business for over 30 yrs. (A+ certified etc.). Ive been a member of this forum for almost 4 years and spent 10 years as a member of another tech forum as well.
Most people will try a number of products over a period of time before settling on what works best for them and the configuration of their pc. Folks that arent sure, do what this OP did, ask in an open tech forum. All any of us can do is make suggestions on freeware/shareware that is easy for the OP to use; if they have questions, they normally come back and ask. If I havent been clear, I would hope that the OP would come back and ask for clarification. I dont recommend paid for products as most folks either cant afford or want to pay for it. There are excellent free products out there. And yes, Avast is one of them.
