My old XP box finally died, so I bought a shiny, new Dell XPS 8500. I bought a USB 2.0 to SATA drive adapter, connected it to the drive from my XP machine and it spun up fine. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to access any files on the drive. I can see it using disk management, but is shows up as uninitialized. It seems like the drive is physically all right, but I can't seem to access it using file explorer.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to get some files off the old drive?

It is possible that the hard drive had some of its records corrupted which could appear as you are seeing. I would look into finding someone who has good hard-drive repair software that can check for this and perhaps repair the file tables on the disk.

Could be the adapter
I've bought quite a few USB to SATA adapters in my time and had issue with quite a lot of them. This is a common result. Try plugging the drive directly into the Dell. Just open the case. You'll probably have a SATA cable and power going to a DVD drive, so unplug that and plug the old drive in using the same cables. Boot up and see if the drive shows up correctly this way.
