Why do cell phones cost more than tablets?

Why do cell phones cost more than tablets and even laptops? There are tablets and laptops with better specs than cell phones, but an unlocked phone can cost up to $900+. Why is there such a gap in pricing?

all about the subsidy
Cell phones are smaller than laptops and tablets, meaning they need smaller parts and also include more electronics such as the GSM radio etc.

Your example of $900+ for an unlocked cell phone (guessing a top end smart phone) is that expensive due to the fact that it is unlocked and thus not subsidised by a carrier. When you get a cell phone with a certain carrier, say verizon for example, they cover a certain chunk of the cost, knowing full well that they are going to make x amount of $ out of you over the life of that device.
