Well it would help if you told us what you had there
After all I have no idea what you have in the way of a computer but I would assume that it is some form of Windows Desktop OS not a Server OS.

So under that assumption scanning the thing with the OS running may not always allow the infection to be picked up You should always scan any suspect system in Safe Mode and even then it's not assured that there are no infections. When in doubt you need to scan the system with a Boot disc like FSecure which allows the scan to be done without th OS running so that it can not hide any infections.

Also if you are scanning for Viruses and you have a Root Kit the AV Product isn't likely to pick that up at all.

There are many Boot Discs that are specifically made to scan Window computers and you can use one of the ones listed here in the blog on Security Rescue CD's.

remember to remove the space from between techrepublic and the .com for a working link.

You'll also need to make this disc on another computer as you run the risk of infecting the disc as you make it if you make it on the suspect system and stopping the ability to remove any infection you may have.

Of course if you are not running some form of Windows none of the above is of any use to you.

A search yielded

Pay specific attention towards the bottom which talks about a storage registry entry to enable device write.

I assume this is your personal machine and not a locked down company asset.
