Looking for free bootable Hard drive diagnostic software

I know you can go to website of the maker of the drive but in some situations its not so easy to find out the make of the drive. a general use (works on any drive) utility would be great, Id just be checking for read/write errors.

I have done the whole google thig already, most I have tried are meh... or not bootable. just seeing if any of you have any favs.

thanks for any help happy

A lot of people just use Seatools
Which is good enough to test the drive but if there is a Warranty Replacement it will not give the correct details for anything but Seagate Drives.

Personally I carry a copy of the Ultimate Boot Cd with me and that has all of the Diagnostic HDD Utilities from the different makers and it's bootable, free and easy to use.

Google this
Free Hard Drive Testing Programs. You will see an article written by Tim Fisher.
The most common hard drive manufacturers are listed there with links to download their software.
I have used all of them on different drives over the years.
