We have a couple of users who require desktop scanners. Im deploying new ones, but Im not happy with the software that came with them. The drivers work just fine and Im able to scan; its the included software for selecting, rearranging, and saving the scanned images that were not happy with (Paperport 11 SE).
Both users want to follow the same basic process:
1. Scan multiple pages in one pass, up to 50.
2. Select, highlight, or otherwise designate between two and ten pages
3. Save those pages as a single file, preferably .PDF.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all scanned pages have been grouped and saved.
Preferred features would include
The ability to display thumbnails of all pages beside a full page display of an individually selected page.
Once saved, pages would automatically be removed from the application without having to be deleted manually.
Any suggestions? Windows applications only, please.

Adobe
Acrobat Pro can interact directly with any Twain scanner.
With Pro you can combine/merge files and similar tasks, in addition to being able to edit PDFs.
You can create macro-like shortcuts called 'guided actions'

Thanks. That's overkill for our purposes, both in terms of capabilities and price. I'll keep it in mind, but I'd like to find something simpler and cheaper.

Over the weekend I remembered I have three unused Acrobat 7 licenses! It took a bit of poking to figure out how to do what the users want in a way they're comfortable with, but I think this will work.
Thanks!
Thanks!

A search on 'PaperPort Alternatives' found this:

It actually looks pretty neat, I will try it at home. I have a HP scanner that does not have the best software.

Scanner software
Depending on whether your scanners are TWAIN or ISIS, perhaps contact a LaserFiche reseller, ask if they sell a "lite" version. Call a CPA firm [ local , not Big 4 ] to ask what they use--many smaller firms use Fujitsu hardware....the software might be available separately. Last, SilverFast used to offer upgraded versions of the software they provided for the likes of MicroTek. They have always supported a huge number of manufacturers with their add-on sofware.
