Where can I find the DMI code for an HP: a6742p?
I had to install a new WD 500GB on an HP a6742p that did not come with any operating or recovery software. I was told that HP requires a special code in order to install any OS (Windows Vista or Windows 7) on a new hard drive.

Well then you where told wrong
What you require is a HP Recovery Set which you can buy from HP.
This is one or more DVD's which you load the system from.
