Those 3 are all free to download and use though if you want one for an earlier version of Windows or a different OS or a Smart Phone none of those will work.

The best FREE Antivirus software is in fact Microsoft Security Essentials. The entire product is free unlike the others Avast, AVG Free, etc. which offer free swiss cheese versions.....Don't be fooled...Microsoft is the only way to go!

either you downloaded only a trial version, OR, you have contracted one of those
fake antivirus trojans. As others have suggested, Microsoft Security Essentials is
pretty good and light on resources. Avast is also a good choice. I used to use
AVG, but lately it wants to install some sort of browser bar that is rather difficult
to remove, so be forewarned! Another good free antivirus package that I keep
handy just in case is Avira. Whichever you choose, only use ONE resident AV
package as conflicts can occur with 2 running simultaneously...you can have
more than 1 installed, but use 1 for resident allways on, the others use the
on-demand scan function. My order of recommendation:
1. Microsoft Security Essentials
2. Avira Free
3. Avast Free
Along with one of these as a resident allways on antivirus, I also recomment
installing the free version of MalwareBytes Antimalware, and use it 3 or 4
times a week as an on-demand scanner, especially after heavy internet use.

There are an abundance of free antivirus solutions out there.
MSSE is one big up and comer, but I prefer Avast if you are choosing a free version.

Also, Malwarebytes have a free edition which I recommend you to install to work with your antivirus, since relying on one (excluding common sense) solution is not smart. Never install two antivirus solutions, since that most undoubtedly will make problems and crashes, but there are tools such as the mentioned Malrebytes which works in tandem with your installed AV. Also, I recommend to use a tool called HitmanPro a regular intervals to search for malware that some of your tools have missed. ESET also have a great free online scanner which I recommend you check your system with on a supplemental interval basis.

There are many free anti virus solutions out there. I currently am using AVG on one of my laptops and it seems to do the trick, granted it is an older laptop and I don't care about it as much, but it works great. There are plenty of free ones out there, it sounds to me like you didn't install the one you tried right or something.

I will also say that even on my PC's where I have paid anti virus I still run Malwarebytes once in awhile because it will pick up stuff that even the paid stuff misses. You can never be too safe and it pays to run different kinds.

Microsoft Security Essentials is better than Avast free? I call bull hockey. Thats a great way to keep clients virus & malware infested. 9 Times out of 10 those clients that called me out to troubleshoot those type issues were only using, Microsoft Security Essentials. Just like I wouldn't want sony to build my next automobile, Microsoft needs to stick to creating operating systems. McAfee site advisor for the browser, A pro version of malwarebytes & avast is all thats needed to stay clean at least in my experience, haven't had an issue with the nasties in 7 years at my place. But we can't stop stupid from allowing it to get thru aka downloading bull hockey. Thats my input. Have a great week folks.

There are plenty of free antiviruses in the market that are truly free antiviruses.
I really recommend Unthreat Antivirus, it's free too and it works great, in my opinion. I've been using it for a while now and I haven't found anything wrong with it yet. It doesn't slow down my computer and it doesn't have any annoying popups! what more could I ask?

Microsoft Security Essentials has been found wanting by some in the tech field, so I have stopped using it. I use the free combination firewall/antivirus from ZoneAlarm. Go to ZoneAlarm.com and download their free combination product in the installable package for your operating system. When it installs itself, it will disable both Microsoft Security Essentials and firewasl. ZoneAlarm has a reputation for being intrusive and wanting to know if you really want to do what you are doing, but the latest version can teach itself in the background as you work. Try typing "kingsoft antivirus free" into google it is about the most professional free antivirus I have seen for a long time and it also does better than avg and avira
