Gateway laptop will not get past POST screen

I have an old (I think 2005) Gateway laptop. I haven't used it in a couple years. I tried to use it yesterday, after turning on it stays on the Gateway screen, hitting F2 or F10 do nothing. Holding F2 down to get the BIOS menu to come up does nothing. I would like to get the pictures/info off of it that I have. Is it just the battery that is the problem? After trying a couple different things like removing battery breifly, turning off, turning back on nothing worked. Hitting fn and F6 at the same time while turning on did nothing. I then removed the battery and plugged into the power source, this immediately made Windows come up and it was running just very slow. I shut it down last night and left the battery out thinking today I could get home and turn it back on to get everything off of it. When I plugged it in and turned on same Gateway screen is back with Boot and BIOS at the bottom right hand corner and I could not get anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated I would really like to get everything off of this laptop so I have it. Thank you.

Try this:
If it hasn't been used for some years, try opening up the laptop and hitting it with some compressed air, remove the ram and re-seat it. Also, remove and re-install the Hard drive. hit the housing area with the compressed air as well.

See if that helps. let me know if it works.

So have you thought to take the HDD out of the unit
Plug it into a USB to HDD Lead and copy your data off it that way? like the one shown here
