how to take ownership of laptop

y son gave me his lap top after cleaning off his stuff leaving OS and applications intact. I have a CD with a number of files I need but the laptop tells me I dont have permission. these are files I created on another PC. Is there a way I can show the laptop registered to me instead of my son without reformatting and loosing all the Apps.
Thanks

You need to take ownership of the files
On the CD but depending on which OS you currently have the way to do it varies.

if you just want to set the NB to you as the main User go into the Control Panel if this is a Windows machine and create a new User Account with Admin Privileges. Then change user and delete the current user account.
