Project Management Certification Costs?

I'm frustrated at the lack of visibility from PMI about the costs of CAPM and PMP certification. It seems to me that they make the system complex to hide the high costs.

I'd love to hear from anyone who could supply the "typical" total costs for CAPM and PMP. Any comparison with the PRINCE2 certification (foundation and practitioner) costs would also be of value.

Project Management Certification Costs?
I just received myPMP in June. Off the top of my head... Cost are around $500 for the exam, the courses for the education portion of the qualification typically run from $1000-$5000. The PDU (Profession Development)required for re-certificaton are new to me, but I expect a few thousand over three years.

I too, have had some frustration trying to put the costs together for the PMP. I'm looking at the cost of classes through knowledgenet to fulfill the classroom training requirement, so this figure is included:
Classes about $750
Non-member exam fee $555
So the bare minimum for me, is $1305. This could easily grow depending on what classes you take and what materials you purchase.

Project Management Certification Costs
I have had my PMP for three years now and I tried to keep the expenses to a minimum when I was preparing to sit for the test. I used these two resources from http://www.rmcproject.com/product/product.htm :

? PMP? Exam Prep Book

? PM FASTrack? PMP? exam simulation software

Using these, along with the The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management for some general review, I received 175 out of 200.

There are also more self-study tools available now than in 2001, so check around on Amazon. As for the classes, you may want to avoid them due to their costs. You should be able to do fine with the RMC self-study tools. Save your money for your PDU?s after you get your PMP. But in the end, do what makes you feel ready to take your test. Good Luck!

They're not hiding ...
it's just that you have a great deal of control over your cost.s. Spend a lot, spend a little -- it's up to you.

Your basic costs will break down like this ...

1. Exam cost
$405 for a PMI Member
$150 surcharge for non-members (so join PMI)

2. 39 hours Training
$0 - $8000 +. (Remember that this can be completed anytime in the last 10 years. In my case, I've completed two courses that met the requirements on my employer's dime (net cost to me $0). I've also completed an MCPM from York University ($6900 out of my own pocket). Wanna spend more? Try an MBA in Project Management.

3. Exam Prep Course
$0 - $5000. Many of the PMI chapters run inexpensive exam prep courses ($300-$1000). You can also take on-line courses ($150-$1000). Or you can take formal courses from training companies ($1000-$5000). Note that all of these can also meet your 39 hours of training requirement. However, you can also buy a book (or two or three) for $50 or so and pass. (Which is what I did).

So your costs for the PMP will run from $405

So your costs for the PMP will run from $455 to as high as $8555 (assuming you don't go for the MBA option). That's why PMI can't really give you a meaningful cost. I know two people who spent about $2000 CDN, one who spent about $5500 US and I spent about $700 CDN($50 for the RMC book and $405 US for the test, the MCPM preceeded the PMP by two years).

Same thing applies to your PDUs. If you're a member of PMI obtaining PDUs can be quite inexpensive (like $0). Otherwise you figure a minimum of $1500/40 or $1000 per year in training.

Does that help any?

Depending on whether you have experience in Project Management, the costs could be lower.

1. Exam Cost is standard anyway - $555
2. I took a PMP Introductory course at a local college that covers everything - $200 (40 hour training)
3. Bought a Prep Book $60 + the PMI Official Guideline $30

Total Costs $555 + $200 + $90 = $845.

Project management, at least at the basic understanding level should be included in more classes. Managing projects would be more successful if IT folks from Tech through engineer had some knowledge about how projects are managed. Might help to reduce the goading that seems to go along with keeping projects on track.

PRINCE2
Hi

PRINCE2 Foundation exam cost is ?65 ( $122 )
PRINCE2 Practioneer is ?165 though you cannot do the exam unless.
1.. You have the Foundation cert
2.. You attend a Workshop which is approx ?400

You have to resit the exam every 5 years.

The Practioneer exam is an 3hr written open book exam, the foundation multiple choice , 75 questions , one hour.

I have just attended Foundation and Practioneer workshop which cost me ?1200 ( $2264 )

I do not see any immediate differences between PMI and PRINCE2. The forms and templates you can download from Techrepublic I guess were based on PMI, the same format seems to apply to PRINCE2

This link will take you to the templates page from the APM Group.

If you are just looking for the exam fee. Figure 545-575. Classes range from 300 per class to 1000 per class. Get some self study. That is all you really need. Books should help.
