Outlook express is getting this from the extension
To change this behavior, go to Control Panel and Open folder options. Click the File types tab,and find the PDF entry. It should show that it opens with Acrobat reader. If not Click Change and direct it to Acrobat reader.
I hope this helps.

The first sentence should be that Outlook Express gets the information from the file extension association.

I have Acrobat5 full version for writing PDFs but use Adobe Reader8 for reading PDFs. When I try to open pdf files in Outlook express(OE), OE uses Acrobat 5 instead of ver. 8.
Can I change this so that OE uses Acrobat8 instead to view PDF file attachments?
All the file associations are set to use Adobe Reader 8 .... I think.
Thanks

Hi,
Try uninstalling Acrobat Reader 5 and then check and delete if necessary the V5 folder.

Thanks Herb.
Actually, I need acrobat 5 (full version, not just reader) for making PDFs. I tried uninstalling it to see what happens but then I couldn't view the PDF attachments in Outlook Ex. at all.
Is there some way to change the settings of Outlook Ex. directly? My folder settings have PDF files linked with Adobe Reader 8.
Thanks in advance
Paul

I have users at my workplace with a similar issue, and there are 2 ways to change the opening behavior.
In the full version of Adobe itself, there is an option to choose which you want to use to view .pdfs, the Reader or the full install. I apologize that I can't tell you specifically where as I don't have full Adobe myself, but I believe it is under one of the General Settings type menus.
The other way is to right click on a .pdf, select Open With..., then browse out to the actual .exe under Program Files for the Adobe Reader, and put the check in the box to associate those filetypes with that specific .exe so it will open every time with that program.
Good luck.

Hi,
I can't remember the details, but sometime back the Acrobat reader file changed its name from something like Acrord.exe to Acrord32.exe. Check whether you are linked to the acrord32.exe file and your paths.

I don't have the answer, but I'm having exactly the same problem (except that I've got Acrobat 5 and Acrobat Reader 7--not 8--installed). All the file associations I can find point to Acrobat Reader, and double clicking on a PDF anywhere except as an OE attachment opens the file with Acrobat Reader, but when I open an OE pdf attachment, it opens with Acrobat 5.0. Not a big problem, but it's driving me crazy. Please let me know if you hear of a solution. Thanks!

Hashira,
I have the same situation except that I am using Acrobat Standard 6.0 instead of 5.0.
First thing I did was, "Set Default" the opening of .PDF files with Acrobat 8.0 (Tools / Folder Options/File Types/Advanced). Then I edited and replaced the action performed when opening with Acrobat 6.0 (in your case 5.0) to read "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1" . This took care of the problem, whenever I open a pdf file from OE, it launches Acrobat Reader 8.0.
