.pst permissions issue

I recovered a Outlook data file and anan archive(.pst's)from a unbootable laptop hard drive. I do not know which version of Outlook they were created with. They currently reside on a burned CD. I have attempted to import the main file into my clients Outlook 2003 program on their new laptop running WindowsXP Home. I am getting a message declaring that I do not have the proper permissions to import the file. How can I resolve this issue?

Try copying the pst files off the CD to the hard drive before attempting to import them.

Also make sure after copying that the files are not 'Read Only'.

Yes. That's probably because the files are read-only on the CD. If it's not an RW and the CD is not finalised. So just copy it to the HD.

I would copy them to a temp directory on the HDD and then you may need to take ownership of the files by following the directions here

Thanks so much for the thorough response, including the file sharing link that you gave on this post. I've had an outlook pst file access problem for over a month and finally hunkered down tonight in front of my computer armed with both of my 1,000 page Que XP Pro and Outlook books, google and techrepublic. After several hours of reponses that didn't quite solve the problem, you provided a missing link that put it all together. BTW, I'm just a casual user and did quite a few things I had never done b4--like use dos commands (cacls). It was a blast! Thanks again!
