*** STOP error!

By lasse_b-techrep ·
Hi!
If i do a clean/new install of Win2K there is no problems. But if i update/re-install Win2K over a previous installation, i'll get a STOP-error at the final reboot before the installation completes. Just when the boot/startup is about to finish, and the little window with "Windows is starting up..." appears, i get a blue screen with: "*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xc 0000005, 0xbdd00177, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"

And there is nothing to do but delete Win2K, and do a clean install...
So what's wrong ??
What does that error msgs mean ?? And - more important! - what to do about it without having ro completely re-install Win2K again ??

Hi!

You didn't say what OS you were installing w2k over, but if it's w2k you shouldn't have any trouble.

PS! I don't believe in upgrades myself, always do clean installs. Have been to much problems with Microsofts OSes and upgrades. D.S.

I was (and am...) re-installing over itself = Win2K again.
There is a lot of prg's out there that messes with the Hibernate-function, and it's not even possible to get it back to work again after removing those prg's, so i tried to re-install againinstead.

My Guess is that it means low disk space

To troubleshoot STOP message 0x0000001E
1. Check that you have adequate disk space, especially for new installations.

To troubleshoot further search TechNet for
Stop NEAR 0x0000001E

No, it does not have anything to do with low disk space, it's more than 6Gb left on the C: drive.

I'm not sure why you are needing to do a Update/re-install over a existing 2000 installation as your post seems to indicate.

Also just after the portion of the stop error you posted their should be a driver indicated that caused the error. The driver name would be helpful in troubleshooting this problem.

That said. This error is common with a lack of drive space to complete the installation. Also since you've indicated a update or reinstallation. If you are using a 3rd party video driverremove it prior to reinstalling. Third party video driver sometimes cause this error during a installation.

If the above is not the case please post further info including the driver that is causing the error. It should be the first filename listed after the kmode portion of your error.

There is no further info displayed/to get from that K_MODE error. The computer just locks up, and i have to hit the Reset button!
Further more there is no third party driver installed, Win2K byt itself finds a suitable driver for the Intel740AGP graphic card.
