/var partitiion corrupted

By motkhan ·
Is there any way to fix just one partitioned in linux (redhat 7.2). I am not able to start my machine as it indicates /var volume is failed.
I am not able to either mount or unmount it.
not able to run fsck either. I attempted to re-install on top on the existing installation, but it dit not allow and indicated that one of the partition/device is still mounted. However, umountall command ran successfully. If I could, I would like to avoid re-formatting. Is there any way that I can only format /var partition or any other means of coming out of this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't know much about linux and not familiar with utilities which come with the OS. Thansk

Try booting off of the cd into rescue mode.
linux rescue

Once you get past the languages stuff, there will be a prompt that will inform you that it will try to mount your system at /mnt/sysimage.

If that goes ok, you will be able to make that directory your root dir by doing a chroot.

chroot /mnt/sysimage

from there, unmount /var by doing

umount /var

and run e2fsck on /var . Hopefully it will correct the problems.
