12 Tips from a Translator to a Project Manager

By deepak.aggrawal ·
Mike, this is veering a bit off topic but your "end client understanding" and "mitigating circumstances" reminded me of two incidents - and the need to think on your feet. In this case it was the postal system - both Canada Post, and something like Purolator (if it was them). In one case the entire container was lost, my client's mail among it. He had a job interview and my translation did not arrive. I e-mailed an electronic copy with a special certifying statement in addition to the usual one hoping the interviewer would accept it until a hard copy could come in. In another incident a translation sent by post also did not arrive. For some strange reason it was delivered to my client's mother who lived in another city! Same solution.

The strangest situation happened two years ago. An end client told me before Christmas that he might send a series of documents (diplomas, certificates) of his employees. While I was on holidays, his courier service delivered it to the wrong address because a European crossed "7" can look like another number. The neighbour placed it on the front step in winter, and where it was moved by wind and weather, it became buried in snow. Around February, 2 months later, my son carried in a chunk of ice with a hint of brown and wondered if this might be important. I chipped at the ice, and we used a hair dryer and pinched each document with two fingers, working as a pair, to peel the documents free. They were laid on a blanket to dry and since many had a stylized drawing of teeth, the penny dropped. I remembered the end client, and asked whether those might be his documents, with an affirmative, "O Scheisse - Ja!" These were original documents! He got his translations, and I even managed to "iron" the wrinkled documents through a creative use of the heating attributes of laser printers.
