2 PDC Emulators in 1 Domain??!!

By james_simon ·
I have 2 DC's thinking they are both PDC emulators of the domain. I've tried seizing/transfering the roles to the other and nothing changes. I've even tried doing a dcpromo on one that is not supposed to be the PDC and it stops shortly after it's tries to unistall it stating that it cannot transfer the FSMO roles.

Has anyone out there experienced this before? There is an event on the real PDC emulator that says that another computer thinks it's the PDC, event 3097, I've found nothing releated to this on Micorosft KB.

Please advise?

Thanks in advance,
Jim S.

You do not say what OS you are using, but I had a similar problem under NT4. I had 2 servers, and an imaginary server that all thought they were PDC. The only way I could solve it was to remove them all, and re-introduce them.

Never seen it.
I'd create a third and try to transfer the role to it, then demote the other two. Assuming that works you can re-build from there. Otherwise build a third, physically remove the other two and run NTDSUTIL to seize the role. It shouldseize ok then, but you cannot re-introduce the other two, and will have to manually cleanup ad USING NTDSUTIL and/or ADSIEDIT. Do a search on Technet for removing nul references for the details.
