2 PDCs in Domain, after loss of T1 conne

By tppurdy ·
T1 went down for 3 days.No synch was occurring w/ PDC & BDC. BDC promoted itself to a PDC. When T1 was active 2 PDCs in Domain. Each server insisted that it was the Primary, the Backup icon in server manager for both acting BDCs was ghosted. From Server Manager all PC account icons in the Domain are ghosted. I tried the registry hack to demote the new PDC back to a BDC, this changed the status in Server Manager, one Primary, one Backup. Dbase synch is occuring, can create new accounts. Howeverall PC icons in S.M. are still ghosted,and BDC(backup)is still ghosted on both the PDC and BDC. Users are unable to change passwords,and random messages indicate that a domain controller does not exist when a user tries to logon? Called MS, they don't have a clue. Has anyone removed a BDC from a domain, then reintroduced that same BDC? Are there Server SID & computer SID issues?
Help!

2 PDCs in Domain, after loss of T1 conne

I have encounter the similiar problem. If the problem you encounter contain the nearly the same symptom. Try my solution

1)You get two PDC in the same domain
2)When try to run with Sychronize User account with all domain. You will get error of such accounts are built in accounts

Try the following suggestion
1)Choose one to become BDC
2)MANUALLY SYCHRONIZE THE USER ACCOUNT BY ADD OR REMOVE IN PDC
3)Delete all same accounts in BDC
4)Delete the computer account of such computer (one will become BDC) in the PDC.
5)Configure the computer as BDC in the PDC server manager.

Mostly the problem you encounter can be solved.

However the SID of BDC (previous PDC will change and result in fail in some software. Please remove it and reinstall it again)

Let me know if any improvements

My concern is with production software running on the original BDC, if \i remove it from the domain and then add it again, will clients be able to launch the software( 3 critical finacial packages, that are DOS based)?

Another way (I guess, easiest):
1. Select former BDC to demote
2. CP->Services->Net Logon->Stop
3. Select PDC
4. Administrative Tools->Server Manager->PDC->Synchronyze Entire Domain
5. Administrative Tools->Server Manager->BDC->Remove From Domain
6.Administrative Tools->Server Manager->Add to Domain->Windows NT Backup Domain Controller->BDC
7. Administrative Tools->Server Manager->PDC->Synchronyze Entire Domain

Can I remove the BDC from the domain, and add it back in without problems with the software installed (3 financials, DOS based)?

This one may already be answered by the above postings, but if not..Use the resource kit. I don't remember the exact executable names, but you've got the Domain Monitor (maybe dommon.exe) to see a high level view of your DC's, plus there's another tool called netdom or something like that that will resynchronize the domain accounts (SID's) used between the DC's to communicate. That sounds as if it's your real problem, the accounts used to communicate are different between the two.
