2000 Server and Duplicates

By d.jones092 ·
Howdy.

Is it true that 2000 Server can find duplicates of files and replace them with a link to the freshest copy? Don't remember where I read that this is possible, but is it a service of some type?

I think distributed link tracking is the service to which you refer. I don't think it works exactly like you describe. It allows shell shortcuts, and OLE objects to update themselves to new file names and/or locations.

Here's a link to KB article (312403) that discusses it:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312403

From this article, it appears that maybe it doesn't work as well as B.G. dreamed it would??
