32 bit child devices error

By michaelrmonroe ·
My computer wasn't showing a cdrom drive at all, so I tried to update drivers and the devices showing under the device manager with errors. Well I fixed them but now my computer won't operate in anything except safe mode. My error says that I have child devices trying to use 32 bit and aren't compatiable. This devices aill cause my computer to be corrupt if computer is booted in normal mode. I am not sure anymore about what to do. I was thinking about installing windows me upgrade as a possiblefix I'm using 95 now. I took all the useable parts out of a Compaq, and put them into a barebones. Like I said everything worked fine with some errors showing, and no cdrom before, now I'm stuck in safe mode. Any help is greatly appreciated.

32 bit child devices error

Hi
The main reason for this is useally a Boot Sector Virus like the " RIPPER ", I would check for that. Upgrading to ME is a good idea. Also you can try the extreme if no virus is found, but make sure you have win95 cabs located on the hardrive and you software for all your devices such and sound card, video..etc.

You will be changing the registry at your own risk.

follow these steps.
Start , Run, Type in REGEDIT.
Export a copy of your registry somewheres like a floppy.

Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
And expand that folder to list its contents.
Delete the folder called ENUM. This is everything listed in the Device Manager. reboot and reload all drivers.

Thanks

Do a registry search for NO IDE and delete the lines containing this reference. It's in the reg a couple of times. Then reboot.

The easiest thing to first try would be to update the primary and seconday bus master drivers to see what happens. That's if deleting the enum key doesn't work. Upgrading to ME is probably not a good solution. There is more problems with ME that any other operating system. A better upgrade would be to 98SE instead.

Here is the RIGHT answer. Go into the Registry....do NOT delete the whole of HKEY_LOACALMACHINE/Enum!!!! Simply go through the PCI devices and find one that corresponds to the IDE Bus Master Controller or PCI Dual IDE controller. Remove the entry. Next, search the registry for the entry NOIDE.....delete any such entries. Then search for BADMF....again delete the entries. Then using Explorer (making sure you have View All Files selected) search the Windows\Inf folder (possibly in subfolder Others) for an .inf file relating to your new drivers. DELETE the .inf file. Having done this reboot the machine. Allow Windows to detect the hardware and load default drivers. If using W95, do NOT shut down and restart when prompted....wait until Win95 has detected ALL new hardware (all bus master/PCI dual IDE drivers detect the two child devices, Primary IDE and Secondary IDE). Under no circumstances allow Windows to reboot until ALL the hardware has been located. When all new devices have been loaded, then and only then restart the machine. You should now be ok. Ignore ANYONE who tells you you have a virus or tells you to delete a whole registry category!!! Maybe they have the time to faff around!

The virus called the ripper, has created this problem in the past, after 8 years in the business, and certified by Hewlett Packard, Acer, Packard Bell, Minolta, QMS, Lexmark, Compaq, IBM, and A plus Certified. I think I have seen my share of this problem, And doing the long route of deleting just certain keys has only a 5 percent chance of working, As always, backup the registry when attempting to correct anything. First Check for a virus, Then Put your cdrom on as a slave on the primary controller, then at the last effort, edit the registry...Faff
