802.11b is on the 2.4Ghz band, and has a max speed of 11 Mbps
802.11A is on the 5 Ghz band and has a speed up to 54Mbps
802.11g is on the 2.4 Ghz band and has a speed up to 54Mbps
802.11n is on the 2.4 Ghz bandwidth, but may be also on the 5 Ghz bandwidth, I havent followed it closely enough to really specify much about it.

IEEE develops standards based on needs/new technology. Also, with these guidelines you can use multiple vendors equipment and they can still communicate.
