98se DUN appears when it should'nt

By kstimm ·
I recently tried out the PC-Friendly (not) software on a DVD I bought, and consequently installed the 'Macromedia shockwave' plugin.

Since then I get the DUN appearing a few seconds after boot up and sometimes after I disconect from the net.

Ihave removed te live update from the 'add programs' in control panel and uninstalled the PC-Freindly program. I have also used fix-it 2000 to clean the registry useing default settings.

Still it appears, does someone know what I'm missing?

boot the pc pressing the F8 key and enter the "command prompt only" mode.
type at the promt "scanreg /restore", press enter and look for a date one day before you install the dvd software.
if you have installed real player, look the settings because this software looks automatically in the internet for an update.
so does too the avp and the norton antivirus programs.

in the microsoft knowledge base there are a
document that you can search with the followings keys : "modem attempts to dial at
startup"

Look in the run and run services lines in hte registry
hkey local machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion
There will be a run and run services entry i nthere.

You're going to be looking for something that'll make some sort of network call. ONly other thing that I could think of that would do that would be some sort of virus on your system, so it may not be a bad idea ot do a scan.

Good luck to you

2 things to try, hope they are of some help.
1.)I get this DUN problem when i log off the internet and MSN Messenger Service which is in Outlook Express5.5 doesn't sign off properly. the icon is near the clock and it is still actively looking to connect, therefore it tries to redial the isp. check to see that there are no progs in your system trying to access the internet in the background.
2.)If you are using IE5, have a look at the settings on the connection tab in tools/internet options.
the settings for "dial whenever a network connection is not present" should not be ticked. It may be that during your installlation of shockwave this setting may have been changed by the setup prog

Thanks to everyone who tried to answer my Question. In the end I installed 98se over the top of the current installation. My settings and preferences remained intact and the mystery DUN stopped appearing.

*as he laughs out loud!* I see you have had the same problem I have reciently. well, i hope you have better luck than i did getting through to the support staff at Macromedia. It's program is asking for a net connection to do the live updates and just disabling live updates won't solve it. My wife has shockwave and flash on her comp. (retail versions) and both are calling for updates.
