A better alternative to the Start Menu: Fences

By mirossmac2 ·
For me the Start Menu is for Services, Search, and Run. Access to everything else is via a desktop shortcut corralled into one of nine "Fences" (from Stardock): Housekeeping, Graphics, Words, Utilities, Security/Backup, Communications, Current Work, Temp, and Drives. The only free-roaming icons are Resources (aka "My Computer" - Yuk!) and Recycle Bin. I guess I really wouldn't miss the Start Menu.

I have one user who runs Fences

I think it's just a return to W3.x and Program Manager, but then I've said the same thing about W8's tiles. I don't want shortcuts (or anything else) on the desktop; starting apps from there requires minimizing and then restoring those already running.

Incidentally, I suspect you wanted to 'Reply' to the existing 'Start Menu' discussion, and not 'Start a New Discussion' of your own.
