Active Directory not replicating.

By surrealx ·
I have 2 Domain Controllers in my Windows 2000 network. In the last couple weeks the two servers have stopped replicating with each other. I am only able to create new users on the Global Catalog server (server A), and these users do not replicateinto the AD on the other server (Server B). When trying to create a new user on Server B, I get the following error message: ?Windows cannot validate the uniqueness of this proposed user name with a global catalog server because: The server is notoperational. Windows will create this user account, but the user can log on only after the username is verified to be unique. For further assistance, contact your system administrator.?

Both servers can ping each other by IP address and Computer Name, and the servers are functioning fine otherwise. I have made Server B a Global Catalog server as well, this happened with no errors. Both computers have a Sysvol share.

Any ideas?

Active Directory not replicating.

Hi,
I'm guessing that the problem here lies in the method you are using for name resolution. In win2k, dc's will typically identify each other via SRV (service) records within dns - these are 'special' records that identify the target machine asa dc. It is not enough that the servers can ping each other by name - that will not identify the machines as domain controllers. A quick test for this is to go to sites and services, drill down to one of the servers, right click on it and select 'replicate connections now'. I suspect you will receive an 'rpc server is unavailable' message. To fully advise you on what to do, I need an understanding of exactly how name resolution works at your site - IE are you using win2k dynamic dns, is it ad integrated etc etc. either mail me directly at darthurs@hotmail.com
or reject this message (so i'll be notified) and add the info as a comment......
