AD USers and Computers MMC

By jeaster ·
In NT 4.0, we could run domain user manager from a remote machine to administer domain accounts remotely. Is there any way to do that in Win2K? I have tried to open mmc from the command line, and then browse for the appropriate snap-in, but cannotfind it. Any suggestions?

Why not just install the Terminal Services client on your remote administration computer, and access the Win2K server via Termianl Services Remote Administration mode?

You can install the administrative tools on a Win2K Pro workstation by running the adminpak.msi file from your Win2K server installation CD. I don't remember at the moment just exactly where this file is located on the CD, but you can search for it. IF YOU RUN WINDOWS XP on your workstation, you will need to get the Win2003 version of the admin tools, however. They can be downloaded from the MS website if you don't have a Server 2003 CD. This will install all of the individual consoles to your workstation Administrative Tools menu. Of course, you have to have domain admin level permissions or other specifically configured AD permissions in order to run them. Hope this helps!

On the Win2K Server cd, search for and install ADMINPAK.MSI
Do a complete install on your workstation.
That will then install the AD Users & Computers snap-in. The AD snap-ins are not installed on Win2KPro or XP Pro by default. You have to run theadmin tool installer to get them.

You should then be able to remotely manage AD.

hope this helps

For answers 2 & 3, you will find it in the I386 folder on the server CD.

Good luck,
