Adding another Win2000 as DC

By Bhrdwh ·
hi, We have one Windows 2000 server (abc.com) acting as our DC having Active Dir Services install.

It authenticates users & works fine. The domain name came as ABC.com automatically, even as we gave it as ABC.

We need to add one more DC as backup to the existing one.

When we install Active Dir Services on the new one, it says unable to find ABC.com (even as it shows abc.com in the window) & does not allow us.

Is there a way to remove ABC.com, create a new domain as domain & use it,without affecting the users/passwords etc.

Any help is appriciated.

The answer is NO! In order to change Domain Name, Active Directory has to be removed. All your active directory info (including users) will be deleted. The MOVE DOMAIN function is not implemented in win2k. I think Windows.Net will have something along these line.

Second DC has to be installed as a such during dcpromo. If it does not find your original DC, you probably have some DNS problems. Check your forward and reverse look up zones, set up Dynamic Registration to "YES". Make sure your new DC can resolve, before you run DCPROMO.

Good Luck,

Hi there,
You definetly have a DNS problem. To help you resolve it, install Windows Tool kit on your ABC.com server. After that, open a DOS windows and type DCDIAG. It will test your DNS server on that machine. You will be able to know if your DNS server is the problem or not. Normally, your DNS server is suppose to be the master DNS server internaly. So the static IP adress you gave it is also suppose to be the DNS adress. Your second server is suppose to have his own DNS server installed with another IP adress and his DNS IP adress is pointing on your ABC.com server DNS.

Hope it will help you ...
