Adding words to the WORD Dictionary

Quite often, when using the Word 2002 Spelling & Grammar check, the option to ADD a word to the default dictionary is not made available. I can see no reason why this should be. I have found this problem even after having added a word or two in the same document! Baffling. I have had the same problem in other Win 9x dictionaries. Any ideas please?

Check Tools>Options Spelling & Grammar
To make sure you have a Custom dictionary. Sometimes, the Custom.dic can become read-only.

I have had a good answer that employs use of the custom dictionary – but… Why does the main dictionary allow the adding of some words, but not others – even when both are in the same document? It is a pain to have to keep opening and amending the Custom dictionary.
