Additional SMTP Address

By Tiger Killer ·
I inherit an Exchange 5.0 Server, and it was configure with an embarrassingly long SMTP address. This Exchange Server talks to a Bridgehead Server in a different location which control by different unit of the Organization. Some other pier units maintain their own exchange server having the same address "suffix" as what we have. Together we maintain our own internal email system with an global address list.
I don?t mind to register another domain name and connect to an additional ISP if we need, but I would like to do it as little impact as possible. Is it doable for me to add an additional SMTP address coexisting with one we have? How do I go about doing it? Thanks.

It really should be as simple as registering a new domain name that you like and having your isp point your mx record for that domain to the ip of your mail server. Over time, if you wish, you can phase out use of the old domain.

Exchange can handle multiple SMTP address for each user. You can simply edit each user's email address properties through ExAdmin and add additional SMTP address's, or you can use the import/export utility in Exchange and export the GAL to a csv, edit it in Excel and use the secondary address field to add additional SMTP addresses, then importing it back in.
0-15 users manual is faster, more then that the export/import process is probably quicker.
