Admin and default drive shares removed.

By LeeF ·
I have inherited a Network that is running WinNt 4 Workstation and Server. The previous Admin removed the default Admin$ and c$, D$ shares on the Workstations. Now I am finding that I need these back in place so that I can remotely install Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition.
I can go to the command line of each Workstation and enable the shares; however, upon reboot the shares are no longer there.
It seems as if there is some sort of Registry hack that was performed to remove the shares.1.) How can these shares be renabled and retained when the system is rebooted?

2.) How can security be retained with these reinstated?

I would presume that you use the command line optins to share these hidden shares thru NET SHARE Admin$, NET SHARE C$, etc; then NET USE for mapping these shares.

To set permanently on each WS, use RegEditor:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Paramaters

Double click on AutoShareServer and set it to 0 to disable it for a server.
Double click on AutoShareWks and set it to 0 to disable it for a workstation.
If the entries are not present, Add Value of type REG_DWORD. The Range is 0 (disable) or 1 (enable - the default).

As to the security, it all depends on how you setup each WS shares, ie. disk level or folder level and whether or not you assign Group(s) to access instead of individuals

Hope this helps
