Alerts on NT

New to NT (4) administration. Can anyone tell me what are the basic logs and reports to start recording using performance monitor. There is one server with about 25 concurrent connections running Oracle 8i using VB as a front end.

Unacceptable application response during peak level and occasional memory / virtual memory overload.

Alerts on NT

Without knowing the server specs, it's really difficult to tell you what you should be truely monitoring..

This really isn't an answer, but providing some general info on your system might help the troubleshooting process, ie., memory config, and cpu speed, etc...

Is this a production box or development box ? Are things running in multiples in task manager (processes not stopped properly, hanging, etc..)

Could be the actual VB app/DB causing your headaches (and example fix would be nudging the Oracle 8i optimizer down the right path by embedding optimizer hints in the main query).

If your server has the right hardware config (enough memory, processor speed) I think you really should look at Oracle being your culpret.. I'd look at Database Configuration and I/O Issues, multithreaded server processes, etc... 9 times out of 10, any performance issues I've seen are screwups in the database somewhere.. usually isn't the server itself.

If your looking to monitor with performance monitor, I'd monitor all the memory and CPU processes, one will definately tell you what type of problem your having and why the server hangs, but I'm going to assume that pointing your finger at one particular item to fix is going to be a little more time consuming than just monitoring the situation hoping for an answer. Good luck !
