All drive letters assigned to no drives

By thecomputerguy74 ·
I have several PCs with Windows 98 that have recently had an odd problem occur. In My Computer, all drive letters A through Z are listed as drives. The letters assigned to actual drives are all correct, but the letters that are essentially assigned to nothing indicate 0 MB in their respective properties windows. I cannot map a drive either because I am told that there are no available drive letter available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen this happen before. Just right click on the drives that you are not actually using and disconnect them. If it continues to happen... then I'm not sure.

Seemed like a one time freakish thing for me though. Maybe a logon script when hay wire.

I tried this, but you get an error when trying to disconnect them.

Thank you.

I had this effect too. It had 2 causes, one was that links was made via unc conversion, like \\server\share\path\app. Some Applications generate drive letters on startup in this case. The other was that local shortcuts had wrong drive letters - Windows generated new letters automatic.
I would leave a explorer window open and check what actions map this shares.

Thanks, but I didn't see any odd activity. I tried monitoring our software, but this wasn't it.

I appreciate the help.

Use Tweak UI, there are several places where you can download this utility. Just type the name in the address bar of your web browser.
Use the "My computer" tab and uncheck the drives that you do not want to be listed und wallah, they are gone. To undo, after installing a new drive for example, just reverse the procedure.

This removes the drive letters from Explorer, but they are still considered assigned to the system.

Thank you for the help.
