AMD X2 or Intel Core 2?

By mjwx ·
I'm replacing my 2 yr old gaming PC which is an Athlon 64 3800+ (single core), Asus A8N SLI, 2GB RAM, Geforce 6600GT. With games like Supreme Commander beginning to tax my current system I figure that it is time to upgrade.

I have already bought a GeForce 8800 GTS (I just wanted the latest graphics card, I have no intention of downgrading to Vista) but I cant decide between an AMD or Intel processor. I'm more that satisfied with the performance of my Athlon 64 and am a bit biased towards AMD.

So does anyone have any compelling reasons to switch to Intel, are there any significant performance boost in a Core 2 (E6600)compared to an Athlon (X2 5200)?

Intel is the way

by cjbruning In reply to AMD X2 or Intel Core 2?

Clearly Intel has created the current fastest and lowest power consuming processor of its kind today. The benchmarks speak for themselves. The only reason someone should switch over to intel is if the best AMD processor that they have is not doing enough for thier particular needs. That is the only reason.

Go with AMD unless you need the fastest and most expensive Intel

by TechExec2 In reply to AMD X2 or Intel Core 2?

.
The Intel processor you mentioned costs about US$83 more than the AMD one (1)(2):

...AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+, US$139.99

...Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, US$222.90

Or, you could buy the fastest dual core processor that AMD has ever made and still save money. And, this processor is faster than the E6600.

...AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, US$195.00

Right after AMD's prices dropped like a brick.

Made the decision a lot easier.

My AMD X2 6000+ was AUD $325 when I bought it and the price has dropped again since then.

I noticed gbruning's post and added mine. But I did not notice that your original post was back in February! Doh!

Congratulations on your super fast AMD X2 6000+ system! That is one really fast processor and a great value.

Based on Google Maps (satellite), Perth looks like a slice of heaven. But, perhaps the bits DO take a little longer to get "here" from "there". ;-)

The office, where I'm posting on TR. No, I mean working very hard and diligently. If you zoom out you can see that if I walk to the window I have a view of the river and CBD

Middle of winter, 20 Degrees C, slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky. That being said we have 30-40 Degrees C summers.
