This will be difficult to do,depending on where you bought the item you could have the store match the cpu agianst a identical or take a look at a machine with the same CPU
So verifying an AMD is difficult to do,no known utility available as Intel has released a utility that will id PIII only

Your motherboard most likely has a jumper that could be adjusted to either set the processor speed by jumper setting or by BIOS setting. Look at the motherboard manual for the section describing that jumper setting, and verify that the jumper is setcorrectly.

I prefer to set the processor speed in my BIOS, and I set the jumper accordingly.

The AMD XP series processors are “performance” rated.
The actual clock speed is lower than the “rated” speed.
This is a marketing ploy since tests have shown that it takes a 2GH P4 to have the same performance as a 1.2GH Athlon.

There are numbers on the processor that identify it. You should be able to verify that the processor is indeed an XP 1700 at AMD’s web site.
While you’re there, check the data sheet for your processor to verify the actual clock frequency.

Also, it is very common for motherboards to mis-identify AMD chips that are introduced after the MB is released.
Check the MB mfg web site for a BIOS update.
