Well, everyone probably has their favorite that they highly recommend. But the bottom line is that no anti-virus software is 100% effective. Virii propogate and spread faster than any anti-virus program vendor can update their definition database.

All the majors are reasonably effective. AVG Free and Zone Alarm free edition provide very good protection (better than Norton and MacAfee in my opinion) and ,I reiterate, are free.

The best home/small office security suite I have tried is the ZoneAlarm Security Suite which includes ZoneAlarm Pro and eTrust Anti-Virus. Impressed enough that I am using it.

good info willcomp

think about this option
Have one PC for surfing the internet and one for you work and games.

Keep the work PC off the internet. You should not get any spyware and virus that way.

The one that you use for the internet use Windows 98 and do not install any other programs on it. So it does get virus and spyware you can rebuild it in about an hour or less.
Or install a free virus checker and free zonearlam on it, so that you do not have to rebuild so often.

Good Lluck

I will agree with willcomp, AVG Free antivirus is absolutely TOP notch and, IMHO, FAR better than Norton or MacAffee products. The retail products seem to hog resources and cause so many problems I couldn't even begin listing them.
AVG is excellent and VERY resourceful, it takes up little system memory, scans exactly the same as the others and NEVER causes problems. Plus all email has a nice AVG signature that it (mail) has been scanned and deemed virus free.

Oh, did I reiterate that it was FREE!!!

Also, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS run spyware or adware scans!!!! Download AdAware (great prudct and yes, it is also FREE) from http://www.lavasoft.nu

Firewalls, personally I hate softwaer firewalls (zone alarm etc) but that's just me. I prefer a hardware firewall and good internet usage practices, only visiting trusted sites, cleaning temp files and running spyware and AV scans religiously.

P.S. Don't forget to keep them ALL updated!!
