Aww,this is a question, which might be put in the range of: what was first: the chicken or the egg?
It would be too easy to say: I use that one, its the best...
I use Norton System Works 2001, which is a suite including Norton Anti Virus. Some sayit cant be compared to McAfee, others say Norton is better...
Both Norton and McAfee works now with YEARLY subscriptions. What I suggest, whatever you choose, my preference goes to Norton, theres a free online scanner called Housecall which you canfind at http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp
Run this regularly besides your "inhouse scanner.
But, dont put McAfee AND Norton on the same box!!!
Hope I didnt confused ya to much.

BTW, HouseCall is TrendMicro's FREE online scanner.
Its is not because your scanner does not detect a virus, you are clean!!!
Went there, done that!

Best and free antivirus?, well it doesn't work that way.
I use Norton 2001, it works great, it is not free but it is not expensive either. I recommend you to purchase it.
On the other hand, Protector Plus is very good too, it is not expensive and you can download it for free at www.pspl.com, it has a trial version, give it a try and if you like it you buy it, if you don't like it just uninstall it.

Good luck,

@lberto

I recommend Panda AV Platinum (www.pandasoftware.com)it's not free, but they have OK licensing policy.
It's not as resource consuming as norton and F-secure.
another good alternative is norman AV (www.norman.com)

It's ok to try software for free. But when you have made up your mind, buy a license

good luck making a choice.
