You may want to check out Symantec’s KB.
How to troubleshoot problems that occur at startup when Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition …
Or the printer-friendly URL of the same document:
http://service2.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/pfdocs/2000051209340948
(Remove any extraneous spaces from the above URLs.)

I had a client who had this problem. I checked out Symantec’s knowledge base and found out how to manually remove Norton AntiVirus Corporate 7.6 from the 98 machine. http://service2.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/552ba2f7636bedf088256818006f78bf/a65391d9101bf7e688256a22002725d6?OpenDocument&prev=http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/techsupp/enterprise/kb/query.html?*col=kb%20us*st=1*nh=10*pcode=*qp=url:/ent-security.nsf/552ba2f7636bedf088256818006f78bf*qt=%2Bmanual%20%2Buninstall*miniver=nav_76_ce*sone=nav_76_ce_tasks.html*stg=*prod=Norton%20AntiVirus*ver=7.6%20Corporate%20Edition*base=http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/enterprise/products/nav/nav_76_ce/*next=*boolean=and&sone=nav_76_ce_tasks.html&stg=&prod=Norton%20AntiVirus&ver=7.6%20Corporate%20Edition&base=http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/enterprise/products/nav/nav_76_ce/&next=&src=ent&pcode=&dtype=corp&svy=
After that, you should be okay to run the install program. DO NOT SKIP ANY STEPS IN THE MANUAL UNINSTALL!!! Good luck!

I hate to say this since I was a big fan of Nortons years ago BUT!! Nortons sucks canal water. It butts heads with many programs and is very difficult to remove from your pc since it imbeds in the registry. Try PCCillin. It works great. You may find it interesting that almost all mainboard utility cd’s have pccillin included in it’s software package….. and the defs updates are free…….
