Any ideas how to access a NAS drive through XP Home?

I have recently bought a NAS enclosure and connected it through my wireless router. My laptop running MCE 2005 has picked it up no problem, and I’ve been able to confiure and use the drive with no problems.

It’s when I try and connect either my girlfriends laptop or the family desktop to the drive I pull my hair out! Both systems are running XP Home.

On my MCE laptop all I have to do is open up My Network Places and the drive’s shared area is there for use, yet when I open up My Network Places on the other systems, it shows nothing. Not even veiwing workgroup computers shows it.

Any ideas on how to get around this problem without upgrading all my systems to XP Pro?

    Many thanks.

      Name or IP address?

When you see it on your MCE2k5, does it show a system “name” or an IP address? Either way, try taking the name or IP that your MCE2k5 shows and putting it into the Run applet of the other systems in this format:

      \\Name
      or
      \\192.168.*.*

Then click OK. Just make sure the firewall is open to allow the NAS’s IP to communicate with the computers.

        Hi there,

Thanks for your quick reply. Got what I was looking for – can now add them as network drives.

        Cheers!

With My Computer opened, go to Tools -> Map Network Drive and put in the same line as you did in the Run command. Make sure to check the box “Reconnect at logon”, then click OK.
