Locked

Any way to lock down a screen resolution in Windows XP pro Sp2?

By Derteufel ·
CEO has a new Dell XPS M1330. The laptop is working out very well. The only issue is that there is not option for a Dell port replicator so we have had to use 3rd party. We found the kensington to work well, it does LAN, VGA, sound, and has several USB ports and connects using a single USB cable.

The problem is sometimes after the CEO docks, the screen resolution sets itself way high so the screen is skewed across his 24: wide screen. Is there any way to lock the resolution to 1024 x 768?

re: locking screen resolution

Is the 24" monitor set as 2nd monitor and not master? Is CEO using laptop LCD as master, then when docked trying to not use LCD as master with 24" as second? With it docked, did you tell laptop to "activate" 2nd monitor (24")?

Also, you said "sometimes". Is the CEO using a 2nd monitor plugged into the laptop when away from the dock?

External is number 1.

by Derteufel In reply to re: locking screen resolu ...

When docked the laptop lid is closed and the laptop is set to use the external monitor only. He does not use any other monitor other than while docked. The laptop knows when its docked and sends video out to the external monitor, just not always at the right resolution. Sometimes it turns itself all the way up.

Firmware?

Have you checked to see if there is any firmware available for the port replicator?

Also, I don't know if it makes any difference, but our setup is a bit different. When the laptop is docked, the 2nd monitor duplicates the laptop LCD (both are on, lid is open). The first time the laptop is plugged into the dock, we go into properties and right click the 2nd monitor and tell it to "activate" instead of extending the desktop to it.

Ya its something else

This is sort of the way XP was made to function. Im not sure whats confusing XP but its supposed to "remember" the settings. Sometimes XP forgets, and max's the resolution out when docked (USB cable dock). I need to know if there is a registry edit or GPO I can us to lock it at 1024.

This is an EDID Issue

by christopher.keene In reply to re: locking screen resolu ...

When useing DVI video, the monitor downloads it's specifications over the DVI interface via EDID format.
MS windows reads the EDID and automatically changes your resolution reguardless of your desires.
When you change monitors useing DVI, windows WILL change resolution.
I have had a big issue with this.

Hardware Profiles?

by Bizzo In reply to Any way to lock down a sc ...

Could you set different hardware profiles?
One for the docked resolution, and one for the undocked?
