Anyone Using Skype?

By jmgarvin ·
So does anyone use Skype? http://www.skype.com

I'm curious how well it works for a single user (or small user base). What is the bandwidth footprint and how does it sound?

SkyPe & PalTalk

by catsforus In reply to Anyone Using Skype?

Yes I have used it. At times it seemed to work quite well but there did seem to be a break in the speech when it got a bit busy. The way they do it is use bandwidth of those that are connected at the time thus spreading the load. This can be configured in your setup if you want to have other use some of your bandwidth when connected.

I did however find that I got a better quality of speech when using PalTalk http://www.paltalk.com/. The way they work it is you push to talk some what like a two way radio. This enables all available bandwidth to the party that is busy speaking at the time. It takes a bit getting used to but I found the quality to be well worth it.

Thanks, I'll check it out

I'm a big fan of PTT and I wish more applications would focus on that aspect of things. Why leave an open connection when you can just use half duplex?

I have used it from thailand to talk to my family in India. As I had broadband in india the clarity was good. I used to disconnect other messenger service during the time I use Skype to avaoid any interruptions.
