App to turn PC into a Cable Tester?

By clipvst ·
I am trying to find an app that I can use to turn my laptop into a cable tester (Think Fluke). Of course, I would not expect full functionality... but what would be especially helpful would be the capability to flash a port on a switch in order to track down wayward cable drops.

Thanks for any suggestions!

What kind of cables?

by mjd420nova In reply to App to turn PC into a Cab ...

I've worked with many custom built PC based test equipment and the USB ports provide an excellent way to test them but a custom interface board and maybe even some relay sequencing circuits would provide what you need. I've done this with IEEE-488 cables but it takes alot of work prototyping. Care must be taken with the USB ports to protect them from unforeseen faults that could short the port and **** the chips right off the motherboard. Maybe even a low end system (80286) and a plug in port card but unless you have a junk box of spare obsolete stuff it would be a tough build.

5000 for a tester is cheap compaired to the work you are going to need to put into that.

And a tester can be certified that contraption would not be.

I've looked for somethink like what you are discribing on the retail market and have never found it. I would like to see what you have developed. To avoid damage to the computer, you would want to have a fuse built into the device like a regular multimeter would. And, of course, I would have my computer backed up before I start.
