we have an all Mac network of about 20
computers. we need to get a new server
and are considering buying a G4 tower
system as opposed to a "server" and
installing AppleShare on it. Are there any
draw backs to this? Will AppleShare Ip
6.1 run on a G4 tower?

You will need to run AppleShareIP 6.3 on the G4. Other than that you will not have any problems doing what you are proposing. I am currently running ASIP 6.3.1 on several 2000 model year G4s/400MHz/128Megs running OS 9.0.4 without any issues.

Just be careful in buying the machine that you get enough "server" when you purchase the workstation. AppleShareIP is going to cost you about $1000 dollars for a 50 client license (check the pricing to be certain). It may turn out to be a push as their base server costs ~$3000 (though I am not certain the client count).

It will run on a G4 tower, be sure you have
at least the minimum RAM requirements -
at least 64 MB RAM. The G4 will not have
the processing power and speed of a
"server" machine - but will do the job.
Just be aware of the tasks the server will
perform - do you need the extra power?
