As an IT person, what do you wish your execs knew about IT?

Hey -- this question is for those in the IT community -- what do you most wish the executives knew about your department and what you do everyday?
Here's a start of some "gripes," if you will, from a network engineer:

On the other hand, I wish I didn't have to listen to them state "I'm just stupid around computers" (or something similar) every time I go to fix -any- issue, whether it was them or something else.

How frustratingly mind-numbing the front-end tech's job is when we "fix" (band-aid) the same problems over and over . . . with never a resolution insight except "we're getting upgraded" and that takes YEARS. Then when we finally get our hands on the "upgrade" we experience the same network issues that have always been there, sapping productivity of the techs and the users. Execs don't care as long as their "numbers" are where they want them.

It isn't going to change anything.

We're not going to change people's perceptions. There will always be people who resent the IT expense. I said in a post earlier this week, this is just an extension of human nature as people will buy what they want, not what they need. People don't want to pay for these things. There's some sort of feeling of entitlement. Maybe it's all the free content on the Internet, and the fact that the answer to ANY problem you have can be ultimately found online. Of course, it does bode the question of if it's so easy, why don't they do it themselves. I don't know, but there's some sort of cultural, psychological thing going on that devalues the work IT people do.

I think part of that is the "a high school kid can do it" perception. And no doubt, there are a lot of geeky kids out there with skills. And many guys in the server room are perhaps a bit too happy to be completely oblivious to the needs of the business, which doesn't mitigate the hostility.

Another issue is the perception that their computing environment should be as predictable as electricity and water. Of course, software is infinitely more complex, and the only way to insure that level of predictability is to cripple their experience. However, I have noticed that perception.

What do I wish they knew? I don't really care what they know. But since they don't know, it would be a good idea to trust me to take care of it. If they don't, they need to find someone else.

It's not magic... Its talent, skill, knowledge and determination!

I absolutely hate it when someone says, "Can you work your magic on this?" Whether it's a presentation, a spreadsheet, a server, a network, a desktop PC or whatever - I don't do magic. I work my a$$ off! I went to college, I've been in the business for years, I keep up with changing trends - WORK, not magic. Maybe it's partly my fault for consistently meeting or exceeding their expectations, but it's a lot a damn hard work. They never see the 16 hour days or the weekend long deployments just to make sure it "seems" like magic. I REALLY, REALLY wish they knew how much work it actually is.

Admit they know nothing

I would much prefer our execs to admit they know nothing about IT. I'd prefer a call stating "My PC isn't working" rather than "i tried to fix it, but i think i've done something". What did you do? "can't remember". that so irritates me, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

We are pro's, so its ok if we come up with a good IT solution.
