If you are running Debian, there are several assemblers available and ready to install. In dselect or console-apt, the following assemblers are available:

nasm - 80x86 assembler
picasm - Assembler for Microchip brand programmable controllers.
bin86 - a 16 bit assembler, mostly used when compiling the kernel as it is used in boot sector creation.
binutils - contains several programs to assemble, link and manipulate binary and object files.
binutils is also available with Motorola 68000 cross-compile support.
