XP PRO should work. XP Home will not.

To join a domain:

Click on Start | right click on My Computer, click on Computer Name, click Change, select Domain and enter a valid domain name. When prompt for username and password, enter a username what has admin provileges to the domain.

I had similar problems until I used the Administrator's logon and password to allow the PC to see the domain then changed the settings for the user.

to join a computer to a domain you must have administrator privilages for the domain and the computer your trying to connect. check with your domain administrator to see if your logon has them. to see what your privilage level is in Xp go to controll panel and open users. it should show to right of your logon name. to join the domain, rt mouse click my computer then select properties then click computer name at the bottom click change fill in the required info ..
