Automatic Reset of Network Connection

By BorgInva ·
Is there some way, some how, that I can have a file/program running that will check the connectivity of the network/Internet every so often and then reset the network connection when it fails?

On one of my PCs, a program I use causes the PC to loose connection every few minutes, but it does not on another PC.
Another issue is my laptop keeps loosing it wireless to the router.
In both those cases, I need to disable/enable (repair does not always work).

So I am looking for something (yes, FREE), that will check connectivity every few minutes and if it fails, resets the network connection.

Is there anything like that? I tried searching but not with much luck.

by BorgInva In reply to Automatic Reset of Networ ...

Using devcon.exe, I created this batch file:

REM Modified 20070210 1947
ping -n 1 yahoo.com
if %errorlevel% EQU 0 goto end
devcon restart PCI\VEN_14E4* >>C:\borg\netreset\log.txt
:end

It works!

IP renewal before connectivity

by diorin In reply to Got It!

A little teak to delay the IP renewal.

REM Modified 20070210 1947
ping -n 1 yahoo.com
if %errorlevel% EQU 0 goto end
devcon restart PCI\VEN_14E4* >>C:\borg\netreset\log.txt

REM This adds a 60 seconds delay
PING 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 60000 >NUL
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /release

REM Manu... hope this works for your problem.

How does this work?

by choronator In reply to Got It!

Hello there, i was wondering if you could help me with using your batch file. How do i open it? How is it used? Do i need a special program?

You see i have lots of ping where i am and the connections aren't really good, so anything that could help me give a boost to the bandwidth is great!

Thanks for answering

How it works:

The batch file is the text you see - copy it, paste it into Notepad or your text editor of choice, and save it as a file with the .bat extension.

You'll need to install devcon if it is not already on your system:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272

This will not increase bandwidth - this is determined by what you are paying for from your ISP. The idea here is to reconnect a frequently dropped connection. (I must confess that I'd be more inclined to find out why the connection drops and fix it...)

"You see i have lots of ping where i am...."

I must say that I don't understand what you mean by this at all.

If you break your leg

by tintoman In reply to Automatic Reset of Networ ...

Do you expect your doctor to just give you something for the pain and not fix the broken bone?
You are trying to treat symptoms here and not the cause, I would strongly suggest you check out your DHCP server and/or router before you do much of anything else!!
