Backing up local email files.

By compu1 ·
We have a small network of 15 users that will be using DSL for email messages. We do not have an Exchange Server. Our email will be handled by our ISP. Each computer is using either MS Outlook or Express. I want to find a way to copy the local *.dbxfiles to a network folder to be backed up. Any suggestions on a way to do this at the end of the day upon shutting the computer off rather than at start-up? I am looking for any information of running a batch file at the system shutdown.

Greetings,

Cut and paste this link into your browser: (REMOVE SPACES if they snuck in while pasting)

http://www.pcforrest.freeserve.co.uk/shutdown_programs.htm

This has a great method to run a simple batch file at shutdown.

You could simply copy (or Xcopy) the necessary files to a networked drive.

(I love DOS Batch file commands.)

Good luck,

Maxwell

The program should be run at the shutdown period automatically. I have written a batch file that will copy the *.dbx files to a network drive but I don't want to rely on the users to keep this updated.

Greetings (again),

Forgive me, but I must be missing something.

You said that you wrote a batch file to perform your backup, but you want it done automatically at shutdown. Since a batch file is a program, and since the link I provided for you states the following:

"How To Automatically Run Programs At Shutdown: Just as programs can be run automatically at startup, programs can also be run automatically at shutdown.....",

why don't you think this won't do exactly as you asked? On the contrary, it does do the very thing you want. Even though the example program (batch file) on that site runs a scan disk, running your batch file to backup you files is the same process. It's a very simple change to their example to do the very thing you want.

Let me know what I'm missing here, would you?

Best of luck to you,

Maxwell

Take a look at that site again. (Don't forget to REMOVE those pesky SPACES from the pasted URL.)
