battery causing laptop to freeze?

By jatie001 ·
Just bought a laptop last week, but I've noticed it's constantly freezing when it isn't plugged into a wall (thus defeating the purpose of a laptop). If it's plugged, I could leave it on for hours, but on-the-go, it would last, maybe, ten minutes before I have it lock up.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista Home Premium and I believe a 6-cell battery.

Any thoughts?

Lock-up or Shut-down ???

by OldER Mycroft In reply to battery causing laptop to ...

Do you mean that on battery power the Dell actually locks up, with static images on screen, requiring you to power down by holding down the power button?

Or do you mean that on battery power the Dell shuts down on its own?

it's a lock up

by jatie001 In reply to Lock-up or Shut-down ???

it locks up. the screen freezes and I can't move the cursor or anything.

I did do a BIOS update to see if it fixed anything, but no go. Also, I checked the battery and I believe I have a 9-cell battery. I'm going to do a trial-and-error in Safe Mode to see if it's software that's causing the problem.

Inspiron power management problems.

by Mayhem1969 In reply to battery causing laptop to ...

I have a Dell Inspiron 4000, which is much older but had power management issues too. Sometimes I think there is a fight between the bios and the os over who will manage power, especially on battery. I have XP, but can't imagine Vista is any different. I would go into the bios and disable the power management and see if that helps. You might also have a defective battery.

hope it's the battery

I hope it's the battery. I'd hate to have to send it back and wait for a repaired or refurb one to be sent to me.

battery causing laptop to freeze?

by outpostarc1 In reply to battery causing laptop to ...

my guess is that your battery is worn out. I have a dell inspiron 2500 that the batt is good but when it gets down low (after an hour or so) it will freeze because there is not enough power for the prosser to run... just a wild guess hope it helps. get a new battery!
