Lockedby joestar7 · about 14 years, 2 months ago
Hi,
Please advise on various backup methods such as:
1.Carbonite or Mozy [online]
2.Using external usb hard drive with it’s backup software
3.Using external usb hard drive with Microsoft backup software.Ease of use most important factor.
Thanks,

What I do

I right click my C drive, choose “Add To Rar Archive…”
Then, make it a solid archive with a 10% recovery record. Then tell it to save to my external drive.
It starts, i tell it to work in the background and I play some PC games or browse the web or whatever, when it finishes it finishes. Making it a solid archive gives huge compression. My F drive is 600 gigs, compressed to 100 gigs :).
Downside is of course, if I need a file back, its a LONG process.

And the compression software you use is?

Since Windows doesn’t have a built-in .RAR utility.

Download the command line version. Install it on a machine, and set up a batch file to do the whole process. Then just tell the old people to run the batch file to do their backup, or use windows scheduled events to do it.

MS backup s/w depends on the version of Windows

If the version of Windows is Vista, use something other than the version of MS’s software it includes. It’s a lousy tool that won’t allow you to select individual folders or files, or back up one entire drive to another.
The versions in XP and W7 are much better, although those may be also be insufficient depending on your needs. Since they’re free and already included, you can try them and replace them if they’re not cutting it.
I don’t trust any of my personal data on line.

Thanks for the info. I was leaning toward Carbonite because it seems to easy to use for retire people.

my suggestion

1) internal drive
2) removable tray and rack to put internal drive into
3) Acronis True Home Image 2010 (which you can find sometimes as cheap as $10)Backup speeds are greatly increased using the internal, removable in my experience.
Good luck
